It’s Time for our Governments to ReflectUS
April 11, 2018 at 12 pm ET
Since the 2016 election we’ve seen millions of women marching in the streets, tens of thousands declaring their intention to run, and thousands more announcing their fury around a lifetime of sexual harassment. But with 520,000 elected offices in the U.S., even if 2018 is another ‘Year of the Woman’ it will take over a century to reach parity. And in some states, there is no path to parity.
Men, and especially white men, still hold most political power in this country: over 80% of congressional seats, over 75% of state legislative and local seats, and 44 of the 50 governorships. Women of color hold only 7% of elected offices and Democratic women outnumber Republican women 3:1, which makes political parity a mathematical impossibility. This unique and urgent time in American democracy makes this the moment to get to gender parity in political leadership once and for all.
The rise in women’s political ambition has the potential to transform democratic systems and create a more reflective democracy. Yet the current landscape of women’s political organizations, each of which tackles this problem in a piecemeal manner, are too disjointed to thoroughly capitalize on this new landscape.
ReflectUS is a coalition of eight national nonpartisan organizations with individual track-records of success: VoteRunLead, Representation2020, IGNITE, Higher Heights for America, Empowered Women, RightNowWomen, Latinas Represent, and She Should Run.
Join us on Wednesday, April 11th at 12 pm ET to learn more about this new coalition. Special guest speakers include Kimberly Peeler-Allen (Co-Founder, Higher Heights for America) and Anne Moses (President & Founder, IGNITE).
