The Women Moving Millions Story
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can
– Margaret Mead, gender theorist Margaret Mead's insight has been borne out time and again throughout modern history. The staggering social and legal changes for women that have been wrought over the past century are now widely accepted. But these changes - in education, employment, government - did not happen overnight. Women made these changes happen - deliberately. Generations of women have come together to affect social change through lobbying, petitioning, public speaking and protesting. And generation after generation, their efforts have created a better world. The time is now for us to blaze new trails in honor of the visionary women who have come before us. It is our turn to pick up the torch that the historic women's movement ignited and take our own place in history - today. Our story - a living history - begins with sisters Swanee Hunt and Helen LaKelly Hunt, whose passion and empathy, combined with the Women's Funding Network, sparked an initiative that has been gaining momentum since its inception in 2006. Through a ‘spark’ gift of $10 million, the Hunt sisters catalyzed a partnership between the donor community and the Women's Funding Network, a global movement of 125 women's foundations on six continents. Women, giving at historically new levels to women and girls, will help to propel the collective financial assets of women's foundations through the $1 billion mark by raising $150 million in new gifts of a million dollars and above by April 2009. To date nearly $95 million has been raised worldwide. The next chapter in our history is yours. We would be honored to have you take your place alongside us in this historic movement.
