WMM Member Event – Annual Summit
2nd Annual Summit
New York City

Thank you to all who attended the recent Women Moving Millions Summit! Our second annual event in New York City was an outstanding success. This year our theme was The Story of Impact + The Impact of Story. We gathered our amazing community of members, special guests, and outside experts over the course of three days for knowledge sharing, skills building, and inspiration.

On Thursday, we were introduced to Mariane Pearl(Managing Editor of Chime for Change, Journalism Platform), who shared with us the incredible story of her husband’s (Daniel Pearl) murder and spoke with us about the impact of storytelling as a tool for empowerment and social change. Afterwards was our Sparkling Dinner Party around the corner at David Burke Kitchen. The cocktails and conversation flowed freely as we kicked off our Summit with our WMM family and friends.

On Friday we moved to the beautiful Gary’s Loft where we spent the full day bringing together our collective passions, knowledge, and expertise to answer the big question: how can we as individuals and as a community better leverage our power and resources to bring forth greater impact for women and girls? The always lovely and inspirational Gloria Steinem welcomed us with short remarks on the unique power of each individual as well as the unique impact of our community and also the current state of the feminist movement. Other special guest speakers included Penny Abeywardena (Clinton Global Initiative), Dr. Priya Agrawal (Merck for Mothers), Angela Rastegar Campbell (Dalberg Global Development Advisors), Veronica Chau (Dalberg Global Development Advisors), Sarah Colamarino (Johnson & Johnson), Simon Goff (FilmAid International), Elizabeth Gore (UN Foundation), Kate Hovde (Center for High Impact Philanthropy), Yana Kakar (Dalberg Global Development Advisors), Cara Mertes (Ford Foundation), Cheryl Alethia Phelps (Summit Facilitator), and Cecily Wallman-Stokes (Center for High Impact Philanthropy).  We also heard from many member experts (see them listed here in the full agenda)! The day was truly inspiring as our panelists and speakers spoke candidly and informatively about their experiences and expertise. To close out the day, we shared cocktails on the roof and moved back to the Soho Grand Hotel for our Community Dinner. Every year we always ask for more time together, and Friday night gave us just that. The intimate evening gave us the much needed space to gather, catch up, and also welcome many new members!

On Saturday, we remained at the Soho Grand Hotel. After a short breakfast, Molly Melching (Founder of Tostan) joined us and shared her amazing wealth of knowledge and history with Tostan. We learned so much about her different theories of sustainable and participatory development practice, the importance oflistening to beneficiaries, and the critical need to measure the internal quality and capacity of organizations and resources as well as the outward impact on beneficiaries. Following Molly was a plenary session with Susan Bales (Frameworks Institute) and three break-out Skills Building sessions with Susan, Kathy LeMay (Raising Change), and Katie Orenstein(The OpEd Project).

Finally, we wrapped up the day and our Summit with a very moving closing ceremony where our members and participants shared with each other their thoughts and takeaways from our time together. Summit participants also gifted one another with inspirational bracelets that each had made during our 3 day journey.  Everyone left that afternoon feeling refreshed, full of love, passion + purpose!

This year’s Summit was truly amazing, and we are so grateful to all who could join us. Please be sure mark your calendars and join us in New York City again next September 18 – 20, 2014!

What is Spark?  It is the moment when head and heart meet and passion and purpose collide. Women Moving Millions invited members, potential members and many special guests to spark lasting change for women and girls at its first Inaugural Summit, a three day event that took place September 20-22, 2012.

The event began with An Evening of Spark on Thursday, September 20.  This special dinner celebration included various speakers, such as: Jacki Zehner, Helen LaKelly Hunt, Gloria Steinem, Kimberly Davis of JP Morgan, and a keynote address by Tyra Banks, who was welcomed as a new member.

Over the next two days we held our Summit, which took place all day on Friday, September 21st and a half day on Saturday, September 22nd.  The learnings continued here and members and potential members alike heard from many speakers with a wealth of knowledge in the women and girls arena.  Speakers included: Stephen Lewis, Pat Mitchell, Vanessa Valenti, Leymah Gbowee, Musimbi Kanyoro, and many others.   At an intimate dinner for Summit attendees, Women Moving Millions was pleased to welcome FOUR more additional new members!

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for next year’s Summit!  Big thanks to all who made our first one so unforgettable.
